Mount Antero, world famous
locality for aquamarine, is located in the Sawatch range of
Colorado. At 14,269 feet, Mount Antero
is the tenth highest mountain in Colorado and the thirty-second
highest in the United States.
The gem deposits on Mount Antero are located above timberline making
this the highest gem producing locality in North America.
During the short alpine summer, a steep four-wheel-drive road will
bring the adventurous traveler within a short distance of the
summit.
Collectors may hike long distances across dangerous terrain to reach
the less explored portions of the mountain.
Daily afternoon thunderstorms can be a hair raising experience and
frequent rock slides hold danger as well as the possibility of
revealing a new pocket of gems.
Mining claims blanket the more productive areas and hard working
mineral collectors have unearthed world class
gem and mineral specimens in recent years.
